Water Reclamation

Why water reclamation is necessary

In all geographical areas and at all times, how water is used is very important to the cities and people who need water. Because we live in a desert, however, water is an especially precious commodity, even more now due to the drought in our valley.

Water Reclamation means effluent (highly treated wastewater) is used instead of drinking water for a variety of purposes, some of which include the following:

  • watering public parks, golf courses and highway medians
  • as an industrial coolant at industrial businesses such as power plants.

Here in Southern Nevada our drinking (potable) water is a scarce asset that must be used as effectively as possible. Reusing effluent allows potable water to be used more for its purpose, which is for residents to drink, than to be used for other purposes. This ensures most available potable water is consumed by people instead of being used in other areas.

 Purity of Reclaimed Water

Effluent is discharged from the three treatment facilities as highly treated water and contains no contaminants or any harmful substances. In fact, the treatment processes used in the Las Vegas area are among the top 7% of treatment levels in the country. Although effluent has not been approved to be reused as drinking water, it is highly effective and safe to be used for other uses such as water in parks, golf courses, etc.

Many businesses throughout the Las Vegas valley and especially in Henderson use reclaimed water and greatly aid in the conservation of potable water because they use potable water only for potable water uses, and effluent can be used for other water purposes.
